AVANAR - spatially determines opportunities for outdoor recreation and matches them with local demand

  • Are there enough recreation opportunities for the people in your city?
  • Where and how far do people in the city (need to) go for recreation?
  • How do the different user groups use the types of recreation opportunities?
  • Is there any competition with other cities for the same recreational space?
Description

AVANAR spatially determines the opportunities for outdoor reaction and matches them with the local demand. AVANAR takes availability, reachability and accessibility of the green environment into account. It helps local authorities to identify the shortages of recreational opportunities. With this information local authorities can decide whether action is required to increase the number of opportunities, or to safeguard existing opportunities against strong pressures to convert urban 'green-areas' into dwellings, parking lots, etc. AVANAR has been applied nationally for the Netherlands and in the three largest cities of the Netherlands: Amsterdam, Rotterdam and The Hague.

The AVANAR method is based on confronting demand and supply outdoor recreation. A circle is drawn around the centre of each neighbourhood. The size of the circle is determined by a user-defined distance. This is the distance within which enough supply should be available for the local population. For example, in the first Dutch national application, this distance was set at five kilometres, for walking as well as for cycling.

When would I choose this tool?
  • AVANAR indicates shortages of outdoor recreational opportunities in relation to population density and population characteristics (e.g. cultural background, income, age structure, etc.)
  • Is a tool for (local) governments to identify and locate bottlenecks and opportunities to take action.
  • The AVANAR-instrument has proven to be a successful tool to aid policymaking and spatial planning for outdoor recreation in a natural environment.
What are the main advantages?
  • Enables (local) government to take action based on quantitative evidence.
  • Is fit for use as a benchmarking tool.
How do I apply?
  • use the WebProcessingService provided by WENR
  • AVANAR is also available from the interactive modelling environment QUICKScan.
