Greenmonitor - planning management activities by measuring how fast plants grow

  • Does the growing season start early this year?
  • Is the grass greener on the other side?
  • How green are our cities?
  • Where do I need to apply fertilizer and how much?
Description

Based on 10x10 metre resolution satellite imagery the Greenmonitor calculates a “Green Index” for all of the Netherlands three times a week. The index literally determines how green the surface is (or, the quantity of biomass) and through time, it is a measure of how fast the plants grow. The Green Index runs from 0 to 1, where 1 stands for maximum greenness and productivity.

When would I choose this tool?

The change of the Green Index shows beautifully how the growing season develops throughout the year. It shows the impact of weather conditions and human activities on the growth of plants. The Greenmonitor is used by agricultural processors to predict yields and optimize supply chain logistics. It is used to support farmers to optimize the fertilizer or pesticide gift within a parcel. The Greenmonitor helps governments to monitor binding agricultural regulations on crop rotation and farm management.

What are the main advantages?
  • Current, up-to-date data provision.
  • Open data.
  • High resolution imagery on field level.
  • Complete spatial coverage of the Netherlands.
  • Objective and transparent quantitative data.
